Advertising Trends: The Most Popular Types of Digital Ads ⚠️

Let me tell you I’ve been working in the digital marketing world for almost two decades and I’ve seen a lot of changes.

One thing that’s become increasingly important is understanding what kind of ads your competitors are running.

Knowing this can give you a serious edge in the market.

Diving Deep into Digital Ad Trends

Recently I had the chance to explore some fascinating data on advertising trends.

This research looked at almost a thousand domains across different industries and it was a real eye-opener.

We wanted to see what kinds of ads are out there how much money is being spent and what channels are most popular.

Understanding the Landscape

To start we defined the different types of digital ads:

  • HTML5 Static Ads: These are simple images that don’t move. Think of them as the classic banner ads but with modern technology.
  • HTML5 Animated Ads: These are more engaging incorporating animations or interactive elements.
  • Banner Ads: You’re probably familiar with these the rectangular ads that often appear across the top or sides of websites.
  • Video Ads: These are the ads that play on websites and social media platforms often before or during a video.
  • Carousel Ads: These are ads that show a series of images or videos that users can swipe through.
  • In-Stream Video Ads: These ads are played within a video usually as a short clip before the main content.
  • Promoted Account Ads: These are ads that appear on social media platforms promoting a specific account or brand.

We looked at three main channels:

  • Social Media: This covers ads on platforms like Facebook Instagram Twitter and TikTok.
  • Display: These are ads shown on websites and apps often in the form of banners or static images.
  • Video: This encompasses ads shown on YouTube along with ads that play before or during videos on other platforms.

Uncovering the Big Players

We analyzed data from January 2021 to May 2023 which allowed us to see how trends changed over time.

The Retail industry emerged as the biggest spender pouring an average of $443.4 million per month into advertising about 95% more than the second-highest spender the Streaming Services industry.

Now when it comes to specific platforms Facebook dominated the scene with an incredible $2.5 billion in total spending.

It’s a massive player! Instagram came in second followed by Twitter and TikTok.

The Rise of Video and Social Media

Social media advertising took the lead in terms of overall spending accounting for over 40% of the total across the entire time frame.

Video ads saw a significant increase in spending over time while display ads showed some fluctuations.

Channel Preferences Vary by Industry

Here’s where it gets interesting: different industries have different preferences when it comes to advertising channels.

Social media was the most popular channel for Fashion Food Delivery and Online Education.

On the other hand Home Décor Pets and surprisingly Retail relied on social media less.

Video was a favorite for SaaS Travel and Pets while Media and Dating companies leaned towards other channels.

Display advertising was a go-to for Dating Retail and Home Décor but not so much for Fashion and Food Delivery.

Analyzing Ad Lifespan

We also looked at how long different ad types tended to stay live.

Interestingly banner ads had the longest lifespan an average of 135 days.

Video ads were much shorter-lived lasting an average of 53 days.

This suggests that video ads need more frequent updates while banner ads might be a good choice for longer-term campaigns.
