10 Things Every Designer Should Know ⚠️

I’ve been designing websites for a while now and it’s a field that’s constantly evolving.

Every day brings new challenges and opportunities and it’s easy to get lost in the whirlwind of trends and technologies.

But through all the noise there are some fundamental principles that remain constant.

10 Things Every Designer Should Know

Here are 10 things I’ve learned over the years that have helped me become a better designer and I think they can be incredibly valuable for anyone starting out or looking to level up their design game.

1. Don’t Just Consume Create!

Inspiration is everywhere these days! You’ve got Behance Dribbble and countless other platforms bursting with amazing design work. It’s tempting to just scroll endlessly soaking it all in. But here’s the thing: consuming without creating is like eating without digesting. You need to put what you see into practice experiment with different styles and techniques and push your own boundaries.

2. Hone Your Craft Every Day

You know that feeling when you have a big dream but just can’t seem to take action? It’s easy to get caught up in the “someday I’ll…” mindset. But the truth is your skills won’t improve overnight. Make a habit of working on your craft every single day even if it’s just for 15 minutes. Growth is a gradual process and consistent effort is key.

3. Question the Status Quo

We often rely on conventions in design because they’ve worked in the past but they can easily lead to predictability and stagnation. Don’t be afraid to challenge what’s considered “normal”. Experiment with new layouts typography and color palettes. The path to innovation is paved with creative risks.

4. Tell a Story with Your Design

Design is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about connecting with people on an emotional level. Think about the story behind your design and how it can resonate with your audience. What emotions do you want to evoke? What message are you trying to convey?

5. Embrace the Process

The finished product is important but it’s the process of creating that really matters. Don’t get too hung up on achieving the “perfect” design. Embrace the journey the experimentation and the iterations. It’s in the process that you truly learn and grow.

6. Focus on Your Superpower

It’s easy to get caught up in the need to be a master of everything but specializing in something is key. Choose an area where you can truly excel and become a recognized expert. But it’s important to understand the context in which your skills thrive. Know how your work interacts with other disciplines like development.

7. Treat Every Project Like Your Magnum Opus

We all have that idea for the perfect project the one that will make us famous. But the reality is every project deserves your full attention. Make each one your masterpiece even if it’s a small website for a local business. You never know when a project might lead to something bigger.

8. Embrace Constraints

Constraints aren’t limitations; they’re opportunities. They force you to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions within the given boundaries. As Charles Eames said “The ability of the designer to recognize as many of the constraints as possible — his willingness and enthusiasm for working within these constraints… is one of the few effective keys to the design problem.”

9. Share Your Knowledge

The design community is a collaborative one. Be willing to share your expertise and learn from others. We’re all on the same team striving to create better design experiences.

10. Enjoy the Journey

Being a designer is a privilege.

It’s a chance to make a difference to create beautiful things and to bring ideas to life.

So enjoy the process embrace the challenges and never stop learning.

I hope these 10 things resonate with you.

Remember there’s no single path to success but these principles can help you navigate the ever-evolving world of design.

Keep creating keep learning and keep pushing your boundaries!
