Contabo’s Early Days: From a Website to a Rechenzentrum

Christoph started in the support department which is where he really got a feel for the company’s focus on customer experience.
He said that the old website back in the early days was super basic and it was hard for customers to customize things.
But then they launched a new website that made ordering way easier and it’s pretty crazy how much that changed things.
He also talked about how big of a deal it was when they opened their own Rechenzentrum (data center) in Nuremberg.
He said that gave them way more control over their servers and made it possible for them to provide faster support.
Like imagine getting your tech issues fixed in a snap!
The Rebranding: Giga-Hosting to Contabo
Remember when Contabo was called Giga-Hosting? Yeah that was a big deal! Christoph said that when the company rebranded employees felt a stronger connection to the brand.
It was like “This is our company now!”
But some customers were hesitant at first.
They worried about the changes to their contracts and it took a while for Contabo to prove that it was all about the name and the reliability of their services remained the same.
Growing Pains: Scaling Up While Staying Customer-Focused
Now Contabo has blown up.
I mean they reached 100000 active customers in 2021 and 160000 in 2023! 🤯 It’s insane how much they’ve grown.
Christoph talked about how they’ve had to adapt internally to keep up creating new teams and departments to make sure they can handle all the new customers.
But what’s even more impressive is how they’ve managed to stay true to their customer-focused approach.
He emphasized how important direct communication is to them.
So even though they’ve grown a ton everyone is still reachable.
They’ve got a system where every customer can get fast help – like no waiting for hours on hold! And it’s cool that they’re also using automation and new features to make it easier for customers to find solutions on their own.
The Customer is King: A Personal Touch
For Christoph “the customer is king” is about going above and beyond.
He’s got this awesome story about how he spent hours on the phone with a customer to help them find the perfect product.
It’s this kind of dedication that really matters to him.
International Challenges: Overcoming Cultural Differences
I asked him about working with customers from all over the world and how cultural differences affect things.
But he said it’s actually not that big of a deal.
He said that in the IT world everyone’s focused on solving problems and finding solutions which kind of transcends cultural boundaries.
The only thing that sometimes gets tricky he said is remembering the correct forms of address in different regions.
But he’s never had anyone complain about it and he’s glad that customers are so understanding!
A Career in the Cloud: What to Expect
For anyone thinking about a career in the cloud Christoph had some great advice.
He admitted that he didn’t have much of an IT background when he started but he’s learned so much along the way.
He said that everyone uses computers and the internet but not everyone knows what happens behind the scenes.
He says that being in the cloud has made him way more tech-savvy and he thinks it’s definitely worth it.
He sees a lot of potential for the future of the IT field.
