One of my favorite concepts in minimalism is the 80/20 rule also known as the Pareto principle.

It basically says that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts.

This applies to pretty much every aspect of life from work to relationships to your belongings.

For example you might find that 80% of your wardrobe consists of only 20% of your clothes.

Think about it how many outfits do you really wear on a regular basis? The rest probably just hangs there taking up space and adding to your mental clutter.

The same goes for your time energy and commitments.

There are certain things you do that bring you the most joy fulfillment and progress in life.

Identifying those and focusing on them while letting go of the rest is a core principle of minimalism.

Get four boxes labeled “Keep” “Donate” “Trash” and “Maybe.” As you go through your belongings put each item in the appropriate box. The “Maybe” box is for items you’re not sure about. You can revisit this box later and make a final decision.
  • Declutter digitally: Your digital life can be just as cluttered as your physical life. Take some time to clean up your inbox delete unused apps and organize your files.
  • Minimalist Shopping: When you do need to buy something new consider the following:
    • Do you need it? Is this something you truly need or is it something you want?
    • Will it bring you joy? This is a great question to ask yourself before making a purchase. Will it actually add value to your life or is it just another distraction?
    • Will it last? Invest in high-quality items that will last for years to come.
